With banners weighing in with a whopping 0.04 click through rate, what is the future for this ever present ad format which can take up 30% of the screen?

Firefox’s ad blocker makes light work of diluting even the most sophisticated brand message and the more savvy the surfer, the less they attention they pay to online advertising. Will banners develop into a brand awareness tool or will there be another use for the format that brought us "shoot the duck"?

I disagree with Jeffrey W in many respects. I don’t believe display advertising is not long for this world but think that it will adapt and become more relevant to the page and user.

Display advertisers need to take a lead out of Google Adsense’s success by realising that relevance is the key to interaction and subsequently conversions.

I used to work on the booking of display advertising for a price comparison website and I learnt that sometimes it’s a situation of the right banner for the right site and when you get this you make shed loads of money since display is a fairly cheap medium.

So basically I think display needs a few things to prosper:

1. A far greater level of variation
2. Easier testing and tweaking of creatives
3. More accessability to the ordinary site owner….everyone can use Adwords but how many people can design good display creatives?
4. #3 would mean a greater level of competition which would in turn lead to #2 and #1 as site owners try to optimise their banners to the top.
5. Interaction with the creatives themselves to get people engaged with them not only as advertising mediums but also things of use.

I have followed a couple other so-called IM "gurus" and they provide you with fluff and don’t give you the facts like Matt does. I wish you the best on your new business adventure!

Here’s a few ideas:
1)Write articles and submit them to article directories
2)Learn SEO (online and offline)
3)Exchange links with other people in your same niche
4)Start building a list and email them regularly
5)Write a free report and make it rebrandable
6)Create a myspace profile and join as many groups as possible and start adding friends then you can post bulletins, and make comments on high profile myspace sites (actors, bands,etc)….
7)Pick one of these and do it until you see results or you’ll see minimul results all the way around
8)Use PLR articles in your niche, or other niches and inadverently [sic] add your links within either articles or blog posts (make it make sense)

That should keep you busy and I should charge you for all that actually……

I have loked at a few, but they are WAY too expensive for my budget. I have no idea about the web, but I do know there is business to be had.

I’ve lost a lot of money on AdWords myself. But I have lost more money paying for hits through other services. One site was simply sending me forwarded traffic from random web pages that have absolutely nothing to do with my product.

I honestly wouldn’t trust any company or site that claims to send me a certain number of hits or directed traffic.

Nearly everyone uses Google these days, so your best options for getting good traffic are proper search engine optimization, legitimate link exchange, , social bookmarking and careful, researched use of AdWords.

SEO is something you can hire out and probably get a better job done than what you can do yourself – this is possibly true with link exchange too. But Bookmarking and AdWords is easy enough to do yourself,and you’re likely to get ripped off by anyone who you have to pay to do this.

Bookmark your site at popular web 2.0 sites like Digg, Delicious, etc. That will take you about 5 minutes and your done.

Adwords – you need to make sure you are bidding on teh proper terms. Also, there are other paid ad programs besides AdWords – often with much cheaper cost per click. A one time investment in keyword research software such as Market Samurai or ClickAdEqualizer will earn it’s money back in no time. They’ll lets helps you find what keywords your competition is using, point out alternative keywords, and even help you find the lowest cpc for those keywords. Anyone that you hire is simply going to use this software, and charge you 5 time the purchase cost, monthly!

Do it yourself. You’ll get better results. Nothing looks as unprofessional as having your site linked to known spam sites – that’s what happens when you let someone else do it for you. Trust me, I know from experience.
